Slipping on Thin Ice

By Hunter Fegan

WCA Class President  & Wellness Intern

Brrrrr!!! It's cold out there! It's that time of the year when students look forward to waking up to snow covered yards and the words “snow day!” Unfortunately, not everyone looks at the heart of winter in this way. It causes many unpredictable road blocks such as snow-covered roads or unseen ice patches that can turn good days into long drawn-out bad days. It is important to be more alert to your surroundings in this time to prevent those bad days from occurring. For instance, if you see an ice patch on a typical walk way, if a railing is accessible grab hold for support. If outside in the cold, make sure you wear proper clothing. The lack of proper outside wear can lead to cases of hypothermia or frostbite. In the instance of these cases it is important to move inside into a warmer area and remove any wet clothing. Lastly, it is important to exercise more caution while on the road during a winter storm. It is better for you to arrive late and safe than quickly and recklessly. In the instance that your car may get stuck, remain with your car, as it can be a shelter for you while waiting for help to arrive.
